Who would've guessed that you can actually fly into a small mountain town like Gunnison? You can! They have about five flights a day into Gunnison during ski season. Even some direct flights from as far away as Dallas, TX. A really cool place to stay is the Island Acres Resort. Even though the name sounds expensive, it's not. It actually costs less than the chain hotels in town. The rooms have been furnished in 1950's vintage furniture - including aqua green tables and chairs. But the television is modern and has cable. The resort is only about a mile from the airport, if you fly in. Or about a half mile west of town on highway 50 if you drive.
From town, it's about 30 minutes drive north to the Crested Butte ski area where we spent the whole weekend skiing! Crested Butte has to be one of the best ski towns in the world. It was great with trails that were easy for the kids or expert for the best skiers.
After a long day of skiing, we came back to Gunnison for the evening. Eat at Mario's. They have super pizzas - from family sized to personal sized. They also have the best burgers in town. And it's all reasonably priced. We ate off the $4.95 menu and it was plenty of food.
After a good night's sleep, head over to Mocha's for great coffee and pastries before hitting the airport and going back home. |
